The Geyer family have been running this historic, boutique hotel in Basel for over 90 years. 86 charming rooms, a historic breakfast hall, and two meeting rooms shine in warm colours and are decorated with local and international art from the family collection.

"GAIA" means "Mother Earth", which embodies the entire ecosystem of our planet. The name represents our commitment to contribute to the well-being, happiness and hope of future generations.

That is why you will find only organic and biodynamic products at our GAIA Hotel - in the breakfast buffet, in the minibar, as part of our conference service, and in the sauna oasis.

The long History of the GAIA Hotel

The GAIA Hotel is a traditional four-star hotel that has been owned by the Geyer family since 1929. Today, the GAIA Hotel is managed by the 4th generation and looks back on a history of over 90 years. These were the most important milestones:

1882: The Hotel St. Gotthard is built
1902: The Hotel Bristol is built next to the Hotel St. Gotthard. Today, the historic restaurant of the Hotel Bristol is used as the breakfast room of the GAIA Hotel
1929: Albert Geyer-Hofmann, the 1st, acquires the Hotel St. Gotthard
1988: The old staff house of the Hotel St. Gotthard is demolished and rebuilt as an addition to the Hotel St. Gotthard
1998: The Geyer family acquires the Hotel Bristol and the building becomes part of the Hotel St. Gotthard
2015: Rebranding as GAIA "Mother Earth" Hotel and focusing on sustainability
2017: The GAIA Hotel commits to using only organic products and officially becomes a Bio Hotel
2021: The GAIA Hotel is awarded the Ibex Fairstay Gold Label and is considered a role model in terms of sustainability
2022: Founding member of the "Responsible Hotels of Switzerland" association
